Tips and Tricks For Mounting Your LCD TV
Make sure you are prepared: Choosing a flat panel mounting solution that works for your flat panel is the obvious first crucial step to be taken when starting out. A type of mounting solution called a Universal Mount is a good place to start. These mounts are idyllic due the fact they are adjustable and can support a wide range of flat panel makes and models. It is important to use the specific fasteners (nuts and bolts) that are called for the installation of these systems for your specific type of wall or ceiling structure (such as wood studs, metal studs or concrete). It is important to be sure that the mount manufacturer includes or has makes easily available all the necessary hardware that is required for the mounting application prior to installation.
Use only tested and qualified mounting systems
It is important to use only qualified mounts when you are installing your flat panel. Make sure that you are using mounts that have been qualified, tested and are Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) compliant. Select only UL-listed mounts that will provide ample handling of the weight and stresses placed on mounting hardware and fasteners. It is recommended that you choose a manufacturer that is an ISO 9001 certified facility as that makes mounts with the greatest level of quality assurance.
Take a snapshot of the whole installation process before you start
Ask yourself some key questions before you install the mounting solution for your flat panel. Take a look at where the AV cables come from and where they will be in view. It is important to familiarize yourself with the make and model of your flat panel so that you can locate buttons, power and signal connections in the fall or ceiling. Cord management is important as you do not want lots of wires and excess cords hanging out from your flat panel. Most mounting systems do a good job hiding and minimal zing wires and cords. Most mount manufacturers offer integrated cord management systems to hide the excess wires; this keeps the installation looking clean and streamlined.
Make sure you understand the final application
It is important to understand the room environment and all of the different viewing angles and desired viewing locations before you install the mounting solution for your flat panel. It is important to have the end user’s approval of your mount selection. Mounts have so many features; it is a good idea to discuss with the end user if they would like tilting, pivoting or articulating features with their mounting solution.
Be sure the structure is strong enough!
If you are working in an area of new construction it is important to know the structure of the wall or ceiling area to ensure that it will support the intended load. Know the weight of both the flat panel and the mount hardware. If you have doubts on the structural integrity of the room make-up you will be installing the mounting application it is possibly a good idea to speak to a qualified architect or structural engineer before beginning the installation. The last thing you want is for your flat panel installation to collapse and be inundated with law suits!
Single stud installations
If used with the specific mount and fasteners, a large flat panel screen can be mounted to a single wood stud. Heavy CRT types of televisions have been installed safely on single wood studs for years so do not panic if that is the situation you are faced with. A UL-listed mount for single stud mounting is a good option to use as it has been tested up to four times the load rating.
Keep an eye out for clearance areas during installation
It is important to make sure there is enough space above the mount and the screen. Make sure every angle on the install is measured out before you start with the fasteners. If the mount has an adapter plate that slides into the wall plate from the top make sure you are installing with enough room. If you are installing a moveable arm mount make sure there is more than enough clearance for full movement of the swinging arm. Most of the mount manufacturers provide detailed technical information and specifications to assist you in this process if you are working in a tight space.
Make sure you handle your flat panel correctly
Flat panel screens are shipped in the upright position to prevent glass breaking. This is important to remember when installing on mounting hardware as well. If you must lay the screen face down during installation, make sure you do it gently and only for a short period of time. When attaching the mount it is a good thing to check the manufacturer’s instructions about how to handle the plasma/flat panel during the installation process.
Do not alter the mount, customize the setup or add additional components if you can avoid it.
Make sure, during the installation process, that you do not void the mounting system’s manufacturer’s warranty by adding or changing components to your system. If you do add or change components you run the risk of exceeding the maximum weight capacity which can also create a potential safety issue. It is important to install the mount as said, using the hardware and fasteners provided. It is also important to add only accessories and extras that are approved by the manufacturer.
Familiarize yourself with the instruction manual
To make sure the installation goes smoothly it is important to actually read the instruction manual. Installations of this type; using heavy, expensive and fragile pieces of equipment requires important safety precautions. Make sure you take all steps necessary to keep your manufacturer’s warranty and follow the specific instructions without skipping steps when installing your flat panel with the mounting hardware.
